12/11/2020 Sen. Cano and Sen. Gallo decry treatment and lack of education for children housed Bradley Hospital
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano and Sen. Hanna M. Gallo are issuing the following statements concerning recent reports of children in state support programs being housed at Bradley Hospital and not receiving education or other services while they await placement to foster homes or other settings.

“I was made aware of this situation earlier this week and to say that I was heartbroken and angry would be a gross understatement.  These vulnerable children, who have suffered so much already, are being neglected if they are not getting the education that they are rightfully entitled to receive.  This is against the law and just another example of how these children are forgotten and cast aside.  This will be an issue the Education Committee investigates once the new legislative session starts in a few weeks,” said Senator Cano.

“We are supposed to be taking care of these children and denying them their educations is not providing the proper care and support that they deserve.  They are essentially being told that they do not matter and that simply is one of the most horrible things one can do to a child in state care.  This is wrong and needs to end immediately,” said Senator Gallo.

Senator Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) will be the new Senate Education Committee Chairperson once the 2021 General Assembly session begins in January.  Senator Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick) is the current Chairperson of the Education Committee.
