Senate OKs Gallo bill promoting more incorporation of career/tech education in public schools
|
 STATE HOUSE – The Senate today approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Hanna M. Gallo to promote the incorporation of more career and technical education programs throughout kindergarten through grade 12 curricula.
The legislation (2021-S 0211) would require all school committees in the state to ensure that all public school students from kindergarten through grade 12 are required to study courses that include instruction in career and technical education.
“Career and technical education should not be limited to any particular students or just career and technical high schools. All students need to be aware of the many career options that are available to them, and they need to learn how what they’re learning in all their classes can be applied to real-world activities,” said Senator Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick). “Besides helping students make connections between school work and their future, more integrated career and technical learning will help us create a better-prepared workforce.”
The legislation is intended to ensure that public schools are helping students make connections between what they’re learning in math, or English or any other subject and real-world careers, to keep the curriculum relevant to students and help them explore all of the opportunities available to them as they navigate their academic, personal and professional journeys.
The bill, which now heads to the House of Representatives, is cosponsored by Sen. Frank Lombardo III (D-Dist. 25, Johnston), Sen. Roger A. Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland) and Sen. Louis P DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton).
