Fallon students perform in honor of Opening Day at McCoy Stadium at invitation of Messier
|
STATE HOUSE – Students from Fallon Memorial Elementary School in Pawtucket made a special appearance at the Rhode Island State House last month to perform “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” in honor of Opening Day, also known as Ben Mondor Day, which officially kicked off the 2014 season of the Pawtucket Red Sox.
On April 3, students arrived at the invitation of Rep. Mary Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) and led the state House of Representatives in a salute to the American flag. The elementary students received PawSox baseball caps as souvenirs from their visit.
“It was just a wonderful day,” Representative Messier said. “I think the kids were really excited to perform in honor of America’s greatest pastime, not to mention their fun trip to the Rhode Island State House. Ben Mondor was truly a legend in his own right and is certainly a big reason why Pawtucket takes pride in its city. I want to continue to promote his legacy with our schoolchildren, not just because he was the longtime owner of a minor league baseball team, but because he was a strong pillar of our community.”
Since purchasing the once-struggling franchise in 1977, Mondor oversaw the extensive transformation of McCoy Stadium in 1999 and is known for his commitment to making minor league baseball an affordable, family-friendly attraction in Pawtucket. He passed away in 2010.
