RIBLIA Caucus issues statement on ‘racist and derogatory’ Facebook post regarding Lt. Gov. Matos

STATE HOUSE – Co-chairs of the Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian-American and Pacific Islander (RIBLIA) Caucus, Rep. Karen Alzate and Sen. Tiara Mack, are issuing the following statement concerning a recent Facebook post regarding Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos. The post is critical of a graduation speech that Lt. Governor Matos delivered to North Kingstown High School graduates.
“Lt. Gov. Matos is the true embodiment of the American Dream, and her journey from being a hardworking and determined young immigrant to the halls of the Rhode Island State House should be applauded and admired. This vile Facebook post comes as no surprise due to its author, but its racist and derogatory personal attacks against Lt. Gov. Matos cannot be ignored. Both of us and the entire RIBLIA Caucus stand firmly beside Lt. Gov. Matos and we demand an apology for this hateful personal attack against a dedicated public servant whose life serves as a prime example of what is possible in our great country,” said Representative Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls) and Senator Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence).
