7/15/2026 Colombian independence celebration Friday
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Lammis J. Vargas (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence), Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket), and Rep. Joshua Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) will host the annual commemoration of Colombian Independence Day Friday at the State House.

The event, which will feature food, music and celebration of the spirit of Colombia, will take place Friday, July 17, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the State Room on the second floor of the State House. All are welcome.

The event celebrates Colombian culture and the anniversary of Colombia becoming the first of the former Spanish colonies in South America to declare its independence on July 20, 1810. There will be performances by the Colombian American Cultural Society Dance Group, Raices Danza Folclóricas and Recuerdos Dorados from Progreso Latino, and greetings from the legislators, the state’s general officers, Consul General of Colombia in Boston Mariacamila Hernádez Rubio and Colombian American Cultural Society of Rhode Island President Natalia Ramirez.

Patricia Martinez will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Norelys Consuegra will receive the Civic Engagement and Leadership Award, and Steve Duque will be presented with the Cultural Preservation Award.
