6/17/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Friday to consider several bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Friday, June 18 at the 4:30 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House to consider several bills.

Among the bills being considered are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2021-H 5469A, sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown), prevents a person from being prosecuted for fishing, gathering seaweed, swimming or passage along the sandy or rocky shoreline within 10 feet of the most recent high tide line.
  • 2021-H 5573A, sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), requires a landlord to obtain and have in full force and effect a general liability policy of at least $100,000 for those persons injured on the premises due to the negligence of the landlord.
  • 2021-H 5581A, sponsored by Representative Noret, allows recovery of damages for the emotional distress, grief, and loss of enjoyment of life as a result of the wrongful death of a spouse, a parent or a son or daughter.
  • 2021-S 0834, sponsored by Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), eliminates the marital sexual assault exception when a victim is incapacitated, disabled, or helpless.
The committee will also hear testimony on legislation (2021-H 6438) sponsored by Rep. Jose F. Batista (D-Dist. 12, Providence) which creates a statewide body-worn camera program for police departments in the state.

The State House remains closed to the public as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
