MEDIA ADVISORY: House Oversight Committee to hear presentation on report from Child Fatality Review Panel
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Oversight will meet Wednesday to hear a presentation from Rhode Island Child Advocate Katelyn Medeiros on the May 2025 Report of the Child Fatality Review Panel.
The committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, May 21, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. No public testimony will be taken at this meeting.
The Child Fatality Review Panel issued a report earlier this month analyzing the cases of seven fatalities and 23 near fatalities of children involved with the Department of Children, Youth and Families between 2019 and 2024.
The panel identified gaps in available resources throughout the review of all cases involving adolescent substance use, reporting, “While the need for substance use treatment was a common theme throughout the cases, other critical services, which should be provided by DCYF, were also inaccessible. Our state lacks a comprehensive continuum of care as required by law.”
In addition to the presentation, the Oversight Committee will hear a response to the report by Ashley Deckert, director of DCYF, and Richard Leclerc, director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.
The House Oversight Committee is chaired by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick).
The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
