5/19/2025 Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing to meet Tuesday to vote on bills
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Tuesday to vote on bills to encourage municipalities to support housing development, update the auditing requirements for municipal contributions to pensions and allow a one-year increase to property tax rates in Providence.

The committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday, May 20, at the rise of the House, sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to vote on several bills, including:
  • 2025-H 5229 —This legislation introduced by Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol) would create a Housing Champion program to reward municipalities that are actively working to address Rhode Island’s housing crisis. The committee will also consider an amendment to the bill.
  • 2025-H 6162 —This legislation introduced by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence) would grant Providence a one-year levy cap exemption for the fiscal year 2026 not to exceed 8 percent. This act is enabling legislation in furtherance of a unanimously passed Providence City Council resolution dated March 20, 2025, and signed by Mayor Brett Smiley on March 24, 2025.
  • 2025-H 5947 —This legislation introduced by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) would amend the audit compliance requirements for municipal contributions to pension plans.
Written testimony must be submitted to HouseMunicipalGovernmentandHousing@rilegislature.gov. Testimony must include your name, the bill number, and your viewpoint, whether for, against, or neither. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
