Brian C. Newberry (R) has represented District 48, covering most of North
Smithfield and part of Burrillville, since first being elected in November
2008. He served as the House Minority Leader from 2011 to 2017, when he
chose not to seek re-election for that position. Before that, he served as
Minority Whip. He serves on the House Corporations Committee, the House
Municipal Government and Housing Committee, the House Rules Committee, and
the House State Government and Elections Committee.
An
attorney specializing in commercial litigation and professional malpractice
defense, Representative Newberry is a Partner in the law firm of Lewis
Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP. He earned his Juris Doctorate, Magna Cum
Laude, from Temple University School of Law in 1996. He received his
Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and earned
his high school diploma at Choate Rosemary Hall in 1989.
A former
Little League and Soccer Association Coach, and member of Central
Congregational Church, Representative Newberry is the former Vice Chairman
of the North Smithfield Republican Town Committee, a former long-time member
of the North Smithfield Library Board of Trustees, and the former Chairman
of the North Smithfield Juvenile Hearing Board.
Born on
December 10, 1971, he is married to Elizabeth and they have three children,
Diane, Liam and Aidan.
