1/2/2025 Media Advisory: Legislators return to State House Tuesday
STATE HOUSE — The House of Representatives and the Senate will return to the State House Tuesday to begin the 2025 legislative session.

The House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. in the House Chamber of the State House. In accordance with the state constitution, the senior representative from Newport, Rep. Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown), will preside until the election of a new speaker, which is scheduled after Secretary of State Gregg Amore administers the oath of office to the members, including the six who were elected to the House for the first time in November.  In November, the House Democratic Caucus once again endorsed Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) for speaker.

The Senate is scheduled to convene at 4 p.m. in the Senate Chamber of the State House. The senior senator from Newport, Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), will preside over its organization, which will include the election of president. The Senate Democratic Caucus has once again endorsed President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) for president. Secretary of State Amore will administer the oath of office to all members, including the six senators who were elected for the first time in November.

Both sessions will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv and broadcast live by Capitol Television. The House session will be available live on Cox Channels 15 and 61 for high definition, on Channel 15 for i3 Broadband (formerly Full Channel) and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. The Senate session will be broadcast live on Channel 75 for Cox customers. It will air following the House session on i3 Broadband and Verizon.

To start the year, the Senate plans to meet weekly on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., while the House will generally meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.
