House Democratic Caucus Elects Kazarian Majority Leader
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Democratic Caucus today elected Whip Katherine S. Kazarian to serve as the Majority Leader, making her the first woman to serve in the position.
The leadership team of Speaker Christopher R. Blazejewski (D-Dist. 2, Providence) and Majority Leader Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence, Pawtucket) received unanimous support from the House Democratic Caucus.
“I am tremendously honored to have such overwhelming support from my colleagues,” said Leader Kazarian. “Working with Speaker Blazejewski and former Speaker Shekarchi has taught me so much about effective, responsive leadership. I’m honored and excited to continue the great work of this chamber.”
“Congratulations to the first woman in Rhode Island history to serve as House Majority Leader, Katherine Kazarian,” said Speaker Blazejewski. “Katie and I have worked very closely together over the last six years, and I appreciate her steady leadership, depth of knowledge, and tireless work ethic. I am incredibly proud to have her lead my team and I am quite sure this is not the last time Katie makes history.”
Majority Leader Kazarian was first elected as a House member in 2012. In January 2021, she was elected by her Democratic colleagues as the House Majority Whip, the third highest-ranking position on the House Leadership Team.
Leader Kazarian is an Attorney at CMBG3 Law. She is a 2024 cum laude graduate of Roger Williams Law School. During law school, she was a Presidential Scholar and a member of both Law Review and the Honors Program. Prior to law school, Leader Kazarian worked in tech as a Client Success Manager at Personify Health (formerly Virgin Pulse) and at Upserve by Lightspeed. She graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University in 2012 with a degree in Urban Studies and Economics and is a 2008 graduate of St. Mary Academy Bay View in East Providence.
The nominating speech for the Blazejewski-Kazarian leadership team was given at the Democratic Caucus by Rep. David Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston). The seconding speech was delivered by Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls).
