Commission studying drone regulation to begin meeting
|
STATE HOUSE – A special House commission has been appointed and tomorrow will begin its study of whether and how Rhode Island should regulate drones and their aerial kin.
The Special Legislative Commission to Study and Review Regulation of Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles is scheduled to have an organizational meeting Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The meeting is to include the election of leaders and a discussion of the commission’s purpose.
The commission was established by legislation sponsored earlier this year by Rep. Stephen R. Ucci (D-Dist. 42, Johnston, Cranston) and cosponsored by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), both of whom have been appointed to the commission.
The 11-member House panel is to study and make recommendations about potential laws, rules and regulations that Rhode Island should adopt concerning the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Besides Representatives Ucci and Corvese, the commission includes Rep. Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence), Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), Rep. Daniel Reilly (R-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown), Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, William Facente of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns, Marc Pappas of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, University of Rhode Island professor Stephen Licht, Rhode Island Airport Magazine President and CEO Kelly Fredericks, and Tom McMahon of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International.
