Rep. Perez introduces two bills dealing with premature baby data and motorcycle helmets
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Ramon A. Perez (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston) has introduced two pieces of legislation that would require the Rhode Island Department of Health to provide data regarding premature babies and requiring the usage of motorcycle helmets.
The first bill (2018-H 7371) introduced by Representative Perez would require the Department of Health to provide the General Assembly with the number of babies born premature in Rhode Island; the mortality rate for these premature babies; and the number of premature babies requiring or receiving additional or extraordinary services within the first three days, three months, and one year. The data set would span over the last five years.
“Discussing end of life issues is always difficult, especially in regards to children, but it is a discussion that requires quantifiable data in order to shape our public policy. It is for this reason that I submitted this legislation,” said Representative Perez.
The second bill (2018-H 7373) introduced by Representative Perez would require all operators of motorcycles, scooters, and motor-driven cycles to wear a helmet. Violation of the act would result in a $100 fine. The fine for a passenger not wearing a helmet would increase from $85 to $100 and the act would take effect on July 1, 2018.
“Motorcycles can be dangerous machines and the proper safety equipment must be utilized when operating these vehicles. This bill will save lives because helmets save lives,” said Representative Perez.
