3/14/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Housing bills to be heard Thursday at House Committee on Municipal Government
STATE HOUSE – Nine of the bills in House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi’s 14-bill package of legislation to address Rhode Island’s housing crisis will be heard Thursday, March 16, at the rise of the House (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.
Among others, the committee will hear testimony on the following bills:
  • 2023-H 6081 — This bill, introduced by Speaker Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), would provide amendments relative to low- and moderate-income housing and modifies and clarifies the procedure for review of applications to build such housing.
  • 2023-H 6085 — This bill, introduced by House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing Chairman Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), would amend the required contents of a municipal comprehensive plan providing that the "implementation program" component of the requirements include a 5-year strategic plan to ensure that the comprehensive plan goals and policies are implemented in a timely fashion.
  • 2023-H 6082 — This bill, introduced by Chairwoman of the Low and Moderate Income Housing Commission June Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol), would amend several sections of law relating to zoning ordinances to provide uniform zoning standards for accessory dwelling units.
  • 2023-H 6086 — This bill, introduced by Chairman of the House Committee on Labor Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), would amend certain notification procedures relating to comprehensive planning and land use, subdivision of land and zoning ordinances.
  • 2023-H 6084 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Leonela “Leo” Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), would create the transit-oriented development pilot program to encourage residential housing near convenient public transportation.
  • 2023-H 6087 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket), would prohibit the requirement that a fee be paid for a rental application for real property.
  • 2023-H 6090 — This bill, introduced by Chairwoman of the House Committee on Special Legislation Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), would provide that adaptive reuse for the conversion of commercial property into residential or mixed-use developments shall be a permitted use and allowable by specific and objective provisions of a zoning ordinance, subject to certain restrictions.
     

The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on channels 15 and 61 for high definition by Cox Communications subscribers, channel 15 for i3Broadband (Formally Full Channel) viewers and channel 34 for Verizon subscribers.
