5/2/2023 West Warwick’s rink to receive donation of AMP’s hockey dashers
STATE HOUSE – Senate President Pro Tempore Hanna M. Gallo, Senator John P. Burke and Rep. Patricia A. Serpa were pleased to visit the Amica Mutual Pavilion recently to check out the hockey dashers — commonly called the rink’s “boards” — which the facility will soon be donating to the town of West Warwick for the Benny Magiera Ice Rink.

According to AMP General Manager Lawrence J. Lepore, the facility is planning to upgrade to new spring-loaded, shock-absorbent dashers, which will eventually be required in all facilities used by the National Hockey League. The current dashers, which were installed in 2008 and are 85 feet wide and 200 feet long, are still in good shape, so AMP sought out a local facility that would put them to good use. The facility chose West Warwick as a deserving recipient.

“We are very grateful to AMP for this amazing contribution to our community. These dashers will provide years of recreation and fun for people in our community, particularly for the many kids who grow up learning to skate and play hockey at our beloved rink,” said Representative Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry).

Said Senator Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick), “It is wonderful that the people at AMP recognized that their boards could have a second life, improving a facility that is a vital recreational resource for our community.”

Said Senator Burke (D-Dist. 9, West Warwick), “I’m sure many of those who skate at our rink will enjoy knowing that the boards are the very same ones that, for years, were used by the Providence Bruins. We’re grateful to AMP and to the Bruins, who we hope are heading for success in the playoffs.”

Lepore said the dashers will be removed and donated following the Bruins playoff run. This weekend, the Providence Bruins advanced to Round 2 of the Atlantic Division Semifinals, which they will begin playing Wednesday.
