5/8/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing to vote on housing, veterans bills Tuesday
STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing is scheduled to meet Tuesday, May 9, at the rise of the House in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee will vote on eight bills, including:
  • 2023-H 6081 — This bill, introduced by Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), would provide amendments relative to low- and moderate-income housing and modify and clarify the procedure for review of applications to build such housing.
  • 2023-H 6082A — This bill, introduced by Rep. June Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol), would amend several sections of law relating to zoning ordinances to provide uniform zoning standards for accessory dwelling units.
  • 2023-H 5948 — This bill, introduced by Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence, Pawtucket), would transfer the tax exemption classification for disabled veterans for property taxes to a surviving spouse until remarriage or death.
  • 2023-H 5951 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly), would include the National Guard in the definition of who is eligible for veterans' exemptions for property taxes.
  • 2023-H 5782A — This bill, introduced by Rep. Nathan W. Biah (D-Dist. 3, Providence), would subject to taxation real property, owned by nonprofit institutions of higher education and nonprofit hospitals, but leased or occupied by for-profit persons and entities. It would also amend charters issued by the general assembly to such nonprofit institutions and hospitals, and would apply prospectively only.
