5/22/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Oversight Committee to hear report on process to select contract for non-emergency medical transportation
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Oversight is scheduled to meet Wednesday to hear a presentation on the controversial contract to provide non-emergency medical transportation to the elderly and Medicaid beneficiaries.

The committee will meet Wednesday, May 24, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.

The committee will hear a presentation from Kristin Pono Sousa, the Medicaid director for the Executive Office of Health and Human Services and Nancy McIntyre, the state purchasing agent with the Department of Administration, on the process to award the contract for non-emergency medical transportation.

The contract will replace the previous agreement with Missouri-based Medical Transportation Management, which has been responsible for coordinating transportation services for Medicaid beneficiaries and individuals over the age of 60 for non-emergency medical services since 2019

The company’s service to the state began as a rocky one, with many complaints that the service has either been delayed or that drivers never showed up.

The Oversight Committee met several times before the pandemic began to review hundreds of complaints lodged against the vendor. During the hearings, it was revealed that the company would pay a $1-million penalty and agree to future monetary sanctions until all problems have been resolved.

The House Oversight Committee is chaired by Rep. Patricia Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick).

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen by Cox Communications subscribers on channels 15 and 61 for high definition, on channel 15 by i3Broadband viewers, and channel 34 for Verizon subscribers. Livestreaming will be available at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
