10/30/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Solar Commission to hear presentations from DEM, PUC, Office of Energy Resources
STATE HOUSE — The special House commission to study the feasibility of placing solar panels on interstate highways will meet Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.

The panel will hear presentations by Ronald Gagnon, administrator of the Office of Customer and Technical Assistance of the Department of Environmental Management; Shauna Beland, director of energy programs and policy in the Office of Energy Resources; Karen Bradbury, administrator of energy legislation and programs in the Office of Energy Resources; and Todd Bianco of the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission.

The commission, which is chaired by Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket), is tasked with determining the feasibility of placing solar panels on Interstate highways, RI-Route 146, carports at state parking lots, and other locations.

In making those determinations, the commission will seek placements that would provide and generate maximum returns on the investment as well as producing substantial amounts of energy. The panel will report back to the House of Representatives by April 11, 2024.

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen by Cox Communications subscribers on channels 15 and 61 for high definition, on channel 15 by i3Broadband viewers, and channel 34 for Verizon subscribers. Livestreaming will be available at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
