1/3/2024 Sen. Bissaillon assigned to three Senate committees
STATE HOUSE – Newly inaugurated Sen. Jacob Bissaillon will serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee as well as the Special Legislation and Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Committee on Oversight, Rules and Ethics.  Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio announced Senator Bissaillon’s committee assignments yesterday as the Senate began its 2024 session.

“Committees are a critical component of the legislative process, and I am grateful that the Senate President has entrusted me with these committee assignments,” said Senator Bissaillon. “During the committee process citizens and advocates engage in a robust dialogue with legislators to ensure bills under consideration will improve the lives of Rhode Islanders in a fair and effective manner. I am eager to get to work on these committees, especially the Judiciary Committee, because it serves as the linchpin for improving our state’s criminal justice system and protecting the constitutional rights of all Rhode Islanders.”

The Judiciary Committee, one of the Senate’s busiest committees, considers all bills affecting the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws.

The Committee on Rules, Government Ethics and Oversight is charged with monitoring the performance of public organizations and agencies, considering all legislation relating to government ethics, and handling all matters relating to the operating rules, functions and protocols of the Senate.

The Committee on Special Legislation and Veterans’ Affairs handles legislation and matters relating to constitutional amendments, liquor laws, gaming issues, commissions, resolutions, veterans’ affairs and laws relating to domestic animals.

Senator Bissaillon, a Democrat, was sworn into the Senate in December after winning a special election held Nov. 7 to represent District 1 in Providence. The district was previously represented for 36 years by the late Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin.

Senator Bissaillon, an attorney, is CEO of Justice Assistance, a nonprofit based in Cranston that helps victims navigate the justice system, helps defendants successfully exit it, and helps advocate for system improvements.
