1/17/2024 NCSL President Brian Patrick Kennedy highlights Rhode Island legislators’ leadership positions in organization
STATE HOUSE – Rhode Island House Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy, the President of the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), is highlighting the number of Rhode Island State legislators who he has appointed to leadership positions within NCSL.  Speaker Pro Tempore Kennedy believes that this is the highest number of Rhode Islanders serving in leadership positions in the organization’s history.

“NCSL has served Rhode Island and the country well since its inception nearly 50 years ago, and the value of sharing ideas with legislators across the United States has helped Rhode Island tremendously over the years.  Currently, we have several legislators serving in leadership positions on numerous committees who bring their knowledge and expertise to the discussions that have a national effect on our daily lives,” said Speaker Pro Tempore Kennedy (D-Dist. 38, Hopkinton, Westerly).  “In addition, we have many other State Representatives and Senators serving as members of our NCSL Standing Committees and Task Forces.”

The following legislators currently hold leadership positions within the NCSL:
  • Senate Finance Committee Chairman Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton) is a vice chair of the Budgets and Revenue Committee.
  • House Finance Committee Chairman Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown) is the co-chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee.
  • Sen. Victoria Gu (D-Dist. 38, Charlestown, Westerly, South Kingstown) is a vice chair of the Technology and Communications Standing Committee.
  • Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter) is a vice chair of the Children, Families and Human Services Standing Committee.
  • Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) is a vice chair of the Law, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Standing Committee.
  • Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton) is a vice chair of the Agriculture Task Force.
NCSL is a bipartisan non-governmental organization established in 1975 to serve the nation’s 7,386 state lawmakers and legislative staff in the 50-States and the US Territories.  NCSL has three objectives: to improve the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures; to promote policy innovation and communication among state legislatures; and to ensure state legislatures a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system.  All state legislators and staff members are automatically members of NCSL.
