1/22/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Oversight Committee to review report of incidents, safety concerns at St. Mary’s Home for Children
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Oversight is scheduled to meet Tuesday to review a report detailing incidents at St. Mary’s Home for Children in North Providence.

The committee will meet Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the rise of the House (about 4:30 p.m.) in Room 35 on the first floor of the State House.

St. Mary’s Home for Children is a residential treatment center serving youth in state care. The home offers supportive living for children 6-18 with a full range of individual, group, and family clinical services. It is the only residential psychiatric treatment center for children in Rhode Island. The Oversight meeting comes in the wake of a report from the Office of the Child Advocate that details “significant safety concerns and abuse living conditions” at the facility.

The committee will hear from Acting Child Advocate Katelyn Medeiros, who will present the report and findings in respect to all units at St. Mary’s and the Department of Children Youth and Families. DCYF Director Ashley Deckert is also expected to present a report of the agency’s actions in response to those incidents.

The House Oversight Committee is chaired by Rep. Patricia Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick).

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
