1/29/2024 Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing Committee to vote on ADU bill Thursday
STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing is expected to vote on a bill related to zoning standards for accessory dwelling units when it meets Thursday. It is also scheduled to hear eight other bills related to the regulation of emergency and homeless shelters and local taxation and zoning changes.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The bills to be heard include:
  • 2024-H 7062 —This bill, introduced by Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol), would amend several sections of state zoning law to provide uniform zoning standards for ADUs with the aim of making it easier for homeowners to construct one on their property. The committee will be considering this bill for passage.
  • 2024-H 7175 — This bill, introduced by Rep. John J. Lombardi (D-Dist. 8, Providence), would establish rules for licensing emergency shelters, set minimum standards for a licensed shelter and prohibit shelters from charging fees to residents.
  • 2024-H 7176 — This bill, also introduced by Representative Lombardi, would create a committee to draft regulations for homeless shelters and provide recommendations on their operation to the Rhode Island Housing Resources Commission.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk, Dawn Huntley, at HouseMunicipalGovernmentandHousing@rilegislature.gov. Testimony must include your name, the bill number, and your viewpoint, whether for, against, or neither. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
