2/12/2024 Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing Committee to meet Wednesday
STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Wednesday to hear seven bills related to municipal fines, classifying Sapowet Marsh as open space and the regulation of e-bikes in Newport, among other local issues. It is also expected to vote on a bill allowing the wavier of interest on overdue commercial property taxes.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in the House Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

The committee is planning to vote on a bill (2024-H 7112) introduced by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), which would allow municipalities to waive the interest due on overdue property taxes for commercial properties, just as they currently can elect to do for residential properties.

The committee will also hear bills, including:
  • 2024-H 7322 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Jose F. Batista (D-Dist. 12, Providence), would allow municipalities to seek recovery of fines from ordinance violations by including the fines on property tax bills.
  • 2024-H 7060 —This bill, introduced by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton), would designate Sapowet Marsh Management Area as open space to be used only for passive outdoor recreation.
  • 2024-H 7321 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75 Newport), would allow the city of Newport to regulate the use and operation of e-bikes and e-scooters.
Written testimony must be submitted to HouseMunicipalGovernmentandHousing@rilegislature.gov. Testimony must include your name, the bill number, and your viewpoint, whether for, against, or neither. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
