3/4/2024 Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing Committee to meet Thursday
STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Thursday to hear 16 bills related to lead hazard mitigation, building codes, taxes, zoning and local issues. It is also expected to vote on two bills allowing municipal regulations to go forward in Cumberland and Newport.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday, March 7, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.
The committee is planning to vote on two bills:
  • 2024-H 7244 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Mia A. Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln), would allow the town of Cumberland to require businesses within the town limits to register with the town.
  • 2024-H 7321 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), would allow the Newport City Council to regulate the operation of e-bikes and e-scooters.
The committee will also hear 16 bills, including:
  • 2024-H 7533 —This bill, introduced by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), would require all renovations of buildings built before 1978 comply with all hazardous substance mitigation laws and would require any project of renovation to have a lead inspector, lead training, a lead supervisor and would require that the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training ensure compliance with these provisions.
  • 2024-H 7378 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Brandon T. Voas (D-Dist. 57 Cumberland, Central Falls), would permit municipalities to offer a homestead tax exemption of up to 20% of the assessed value on residential properties.
  • 2024-H 7377 — The Rhode Island Inclusive Home Design Act, introduced by Rep. Jennifer A. Stewart (D-Dist. 59, Pawtucket), would establish a new article in the state building code that would provide that certain new housing construction contain at least one floor that meets the requirements for a Type C Visitable Unit of the American National Standards Institute Standards for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities.
