MEDIA ADVISORY: Sen. Cano and Rep. Alzate to host female students for International Women’s Day on Thursday
|
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) and Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls) will be hosting three female Pawtucket students at the State House to serve as “Legislators for the Day” in honor of International Women’s Day.
On Thursday, March 7, the students and legislators will hold a meet and greet luncheon at 12 p.m. in the Senate Lounge where the students will be recognized for their academic achievements. The students will also be able to speak with a four-member panel of women in government consisting of Eileen Cheng from the General Treasurer’s office, Leeann Byrne from the Secretary of State’s office, Aida Crosson from the Attorney General’s office and Ashley Deckert, the director of the Department of Children, Youth and Families.
After the luncheon, the students will join the legislators for a tour of the building and a view into the inner workings of state government. The students will follow the legislators as they conduct their day in the State House and will also meet with Rhode Island’s General Officers.
“These young women are exceptional students and future leaders of tomorrow and we are looking forward to showing them what it means to represent one’s community at the State House. International Women’s Day is a time to recognize the crucial and tremendous accomplishments of women in our lives and history, and we believe this celebration is a perfect time to demonstrate to these students what women are capable of achieving within the government and the state,” said Senator Cano, Chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, and Representative Alzate, Chairwoman of the House Special Legislation Committee.
