3/11/2024 Media Advisory: Event tomorrow to call for more funding for civics education
STATE HOUSE – Legislative sponsors, students, educators and members of the Rhode Island Civic Learning coalition will host a State House event tomorrow calling for increased funding for civics education in Rhode Island.

The event is scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. in the State Library on the second floor of the State House.

Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol) and Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), who are sponsoring legislation to dedicate more funding to civics education (2024-H 7036, 2024-S 2321), will participate, along with Senate President Pro Tempore Hanna M. Gallo, longtime co-chairwoman of the Permanent Commission on Civic Education and sponsor of the 2021 law making civics proficiency a statewide high school graduation requirement.

In addition to members of the Rhode Island Civic Learning Coalition, the event will feature students and a teacher, all from Providence public schools, who will speak to the importance of funding for civics education.

The Rhode Island Civic Learning Coalition is a multiracial, multiethnic and multigenerational coalition committed to ensuring that all Rhode Islanders, including young people and those most marginalized from our democratic system, have equitable access to high-quality civic learning opportunities.
