The 2024 Awards to Be Presented Statewide Acknowledging Exemplary Character and Sportsmanship in RI Interscholastic League Boys and Girls High School Hockey
STATE HOUSE – On March 18, 2024, Sen. David P. Tikoian will host 32 student-athletes selected by their high school hockey coaches as the 2024 recipients of the prestigious Hobey Baker High School Character Award for a recognition ceremony in the Senate Lounge of the State House.
Governor Daniel J. McKee, Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, Senator Tikoian and Rep. Stephen M. Casey will join in recognizing the students at the event.
“The benefits of sports go far beyond staying physically active. For young people, being part of a team provides lessons that last a lifetime. Sports help us learn the value of hard work, and how to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Most importantly, sports build character. The Hobey Baker award recognizes those whose strong character has led them to excellence as players, teammates and leaders. I am honored to welcome these outstanding Rhode Island student-athletes to the State House and congratulate them on all their achievements,” said Senator Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Lincoln).
Said Rep. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), “Hobey Baker represents the most admirable of student-athletes, those who in their pursuit of athletic excellence still put the development of their personal character as teammates and members of their community first. I am honored to be part of welcoming these exceptional students-athletes, and I speak for all my colleagues in the General Assembly when I say that their achievements and character make Rhode Island proud.”
In 2003, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation established the Hobey Baker High School Character Award to honor high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that “Character Builds Excellence.” In 2006, the RI Interscholastic League (RIIL) Hockey Coaches Associations became one of the first State Hockey Associations in the country to embrace this award.
Annually, a single senior hockey player from each participating high school hockey team is selected by the team’s coach for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice based on the following criteria: coachability, strength of character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community leadership and outstanding sportsmanship.
