3/18/2024 Media Advisory: House Municipal Government and Housing Committee to meet Tuesday
STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Tuesday to vote on two local bills and hear 14 bills relating to short term rentals, affordable housing, homelessness, building codes and local issues.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, March 19, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee will hear 14 bills, including:
  • 2024-H 7893 —This bill, introduced by Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren), would amend the state building code to include multiple dwellings of six or fewer units under the same regulatory section as one- and two-family dwellings. The state building commissioner and fire marshal would resolve disputes between the state fire safety codes and these new state building codes.
  • 2024-H 7463 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narraganset), would establish municipal code red and code blue alert procedures for extreme heat and cold events with the purpose of protecting at-risk individuals.
  • 2024-H 7465 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick), would require hosting platforms for short-term rentals to show a current and valid business registration number with expiration date on all listings.
  • 2024-H 7655 — This bill, also introduced by Representative Speakman, would give qualified nonprofits a right of first refusal to purchase multi-family residential properties at market rates to promote the preservation of affordable housing.
The committee will also vote on two bills:
  • 2024-H 7535 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), would exempt from taxation the real and tangible personal property of the Providence Preservation Society.
  • 2024-H 7657 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Gregory J. Constantino (D-Dist. 44, Lincoln, Smithfield, Johnston) would permit Smithfield to enact ordinances to allow their animal control office to issue fines that are payable by mail and to issue fines for violation of their general ordinances regarding animals.
