Rep. O’Brien and President Ruggerio introduce bill to stiffen penalties for dog abuse
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien and Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio have introduced legislation (2024-H 8095, 2024-S 2744) that would increase the penalty for violations of the care of dogs statute to a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $1,000 per violation.
Currently, the fines are set for a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $500.
“Individuals who knowingly abuse and neglect man’s best friend should be held accountable for their cruel actions. This bill sends a message that abusing dogs will not be tolerated in our state,” said Representative O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence).
“Dogs deserve to live in loving homes where their needs and care are properly provided. If someone willingly refuses to care for their animal or animals appropriately, there should be consequences for their harmful actions,” said President Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence).
The care of dogs statute includes regulations on tethering dogs, leaving them outside and providing proper care and nutrition for dogs.
Representative O’Brien’s bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee and President Ruggerio’s bill has been referred to the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee.
