4/1/2024 Media Advisory: Municipal Government Committee to hear bills on police and firefighter benefits Tuesday
STATE HOUSE – The House Municipal Government and Housing Committee will meet Tuesday to hear 12 bills, including many related to firefighter and police benefits, and to vote on one bill touching on a local tax exemption.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, April 2, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in the Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to vote on one bill:
  • 2024-H 7755 —This bill, introduced by Rep. Michelle E. McGaw (D-Dist. 71, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton), would exempt from taxation the real and tangible personal property of the Little Compton Game Club.
The committee will also hear 12 bills, including:
  • 2024-H 7464 —This bill, introduced by Jacquelyn Baginski (D-Dist. 17, Cranston), would extend injured-on-duty benefits to police officers and firefighters that suffer from diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorders and provide that police officers and firefighters who are unable to perform their duties due to a post-traumatic stress injury would be entitled to an accidental disability retirement allowance.
  • 2024-H 7839 — This bill, introduced by House Municipal Government and Housing Committee Chairman Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), would allow retired police officers and firefighters to earn income in addition to their earnable compensation so long as the amount would not exceed five times the rate of earnable compensation currently allowed.
  • 2024-H 7240 — This bill, introduced by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), would provide an annual 2.5% increase for all active and retired police and firefighter’s retirement pension allowance, compounded each year.
