5/1/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: Rep. Alzate and Sen. Quezada to host payday lending news conference tomorrow
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls) and Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence) will host a news conference tomorrow to highlight bills (2024-H 7211, 2024-S 2141) that would eliminate the special carve-out in Rhode Island law that allows payday lenders to charge effective interest rates of 260% APR that trap people in cycles of debt.
           
The news conference will take place tomorrow, May 2 at 3 p.m. in Room 135 of the State House.  Representative Alzate and Senator Quezada will co-host the news conference with the Economic Progress Institute and the Rhode Island Coalition for Payday Reform.
           
General Treasurer James A. Diossa, Deputy Secretary of State Robert Rock and Jessica Vega, a senior policy analyst at Rhode Island Kids Count, will also speak at the event.
           
The news conference will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
