Media Advisory: Rep. Morales, Sen. Mack to host rally for legislation to hold private universities accountable Thursday

STATE HOUSE – Rep. David Morales and Sen. Tiara Mack will join with education reform advocates and supporters on Thursday, May 9, at 3:15 p.m. outside of the State House on the mall side of the building to rally in support of two bills designed to hold private universities accountable to the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island.
The first bill (2024-H 7546, 2024-S 2564) would institute a tax on the endowment of private universities of 2% of each dollar the endowment exceeds $1 billion. The second (2024-H 8202) would outlaw universities from giving preference to legacy applicants.
Speakers at the event will include Representative Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), Senator Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence), Director of Post-Secondary Policy at Education Reform Now James Murphy and Chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice Evan Mandery.
