Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing to vote Wednesday on allowing tax classification change in Providence

STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Wednesday to vote on a bill to allow Providence to adopt a new property tax classification and to hear and vote on several other bills related to local issues.
The committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, May 15, at the rise of the House sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to vote on several bills relating to local issues, including:

2024-H 7652, 2024-S 2857aa — This legislation introduced by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence) in the House and Sen. Jacob Bissaillon (D-Dist. 1, Providence) in the Senate would amend provisions relative to the levy and assessment of local taxes and would provide that the city of Providence may adopt a property tax classification system with different rates for different classes of property. The committee will also consider an amendment to the House bill to match the amended Senate bill.
The committee will also hear several bills relating to local ordinances.
Written testimony must be submitted to HouseMunicipalGovernmentandHousing@rilegislature.gov. Testimony must include your name, the bill number, and your viewpoint, whether for, against, or neither. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
