5/30/2024 House approves Rep. Perez’s bill prohibiting landlords from inquiring about immigration status
STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives today approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Ramon A. Perez that would prohibit a landlord from asking about the immigration status of a tenant, prospective tenant, occupant, or prospective occupant of residential rental property.

“At a time when finding suitable and affordable housing is becoming harder by the day, it’s vital that we ensure that our residents, especially our most vulnerable, are not blocked from attaining housing.  Our state’s undocumented population are good and hard-working people who contribute greatly to our economy and they deserve a place to live and raise their families, too,” said Representative Perez (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston).

The legislation (2024-H 7959A) also states that no municipality or housing agency shall compel a landlord to make any inquiry, compile, disclose, report, or provide any information, prohibit offering or continuing to offer accommodations in the property for rent or lease, or otherwise take any action regarding or based on the immigration or citizenship status of a tenant, prospective tenant, occupant or prospective occupant of residential rental property.

It would allow a landlord, in accordance with applicable law, to request information or documentation necessary to determine or verify the financial qualifications of a prospective tenant.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration where Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence) has introduced the legislation (2024-S 2188).
