6/17/2024 Assembly approves Rep. McEntee and Sen. DiMario’s legislation raising retired teachers’ earnings cap
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee and Sen. Alana M. DiMario that would increase the maximum post-retirement employment earnings cap for retired educators.

“For many years, I have been trying to help the retired adjunct professors at URI whose post-retirement earnings have been capped at an amount that has not kept up with daily rising costs, especially after their COLAs were taken away.  I am proud that this legislation has finally been passed and was included in the state budget, which will help our dedicated retired educators from being further financially squeezed,” said Representative McEntee.

“A lot of our retired educators serve as adjunct professors, substitutes and coaches and they provide a valuable role to the community.  Since these wages have increased, we must increase the cap of what these retirees can earn and still receive their pensions,” said Senator DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown, New Shoreham).

The legislation (2024-H 7029, 2024-S 2156) increases the maximum post-  retirement employment earnings from $18,000 to $25,000 a year for certain retired educators.
The legislation was also included in the FY 2025 state budget.

The bills now head to the governor for consideration.
