MEDIA ADVISORY: Cape Verde flag raising ceremony today at 11 a.m. in State House
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket) and Rep. Jennifer A. Stewart (D-Dist. 59, Pawtucket) will be hosting a Cape Verde flag raising ceremony today, July 3 at 11 a.m. in the House Lounge of the State House.
The ceremony will be celebrating 49 years of independence and the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva, will be in attendance.
Representatives Cruz and Stewart will be joined by Pawtucket Councilman Clovis Gregor.
“Rhode Island has always been a place where hard working people from different backgrounds have come together to build a better future for our families. Pawtucket has welcomed people from all over the world, including from the ten islands which make up the Republic of Cabo Verde. Today, Pawtucket is home to one of the largest communities of Cape Verdean Americans, and that community continues to contribute so much to Pawtucket and to Rhode Island,” said Representatives Cruz and Stewart.
“Freedom and independence from oppression are never voluntarily and freely extended. It must rather be earned through struggle, courage and sacrifice. On this 49th year of Cape Verde independence, let us remember those revolutionaries who sacrificed so that we may celebrate,” said Councilman Gregor.
