Sen. Sosnowski, Rep. McEntee present grants to Indian Lake Hydrilla Response Coalition
|
STATE HOUSE — Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown) and Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett) met with more than 40 members of the Indian Lake Hydrilla Response Coalition in South Kingstown to present the organization with legislative grants of $2,500 each for a total of $5,000.
The coalition consists of seven neighborhoods around the lake consisting of over 700 homes. Hydrilla, a dangerously invasive aquatic plant, was discovered in Indian Lake in August 2023. The neighborhoods around the lake came together quickly, and have been working with the Department of Environmental Management, forming a non-profit organization to be eligible for federal and state grants.
During the most recent legislative session, Senator Sosnowski introduced legislation (2024-S 2153A) creating the Freshwater Lake Management Program, which creates a restricted receipt account to aid with lake and pond management issues relating to the control of invasive aquatic plants. Representative McEntee was a vocal proponent of the legislation as a member of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.
Gov. Dan McKee signed the bill into law on June 26.
