Rep. Morales calls on governor to appoint a person of color to RIPTA board
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) is calling on Gov. Daniel McKee to appoint a person of color to the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority’s (RIPTA) board of directors. The term of the board’s only member of color expired in April and a replacement has yet to be appointed by the governor.
“With the term of Marcy Reyes expiring this past April, the RIPTA board has been left without a voice reflecting the thoughts and experiences of people of color who depend on RIPTA. With at least one third of RIPTA’s daily riders being people of color, I urge the governor to nominate a person of color who can properly advise the RIPTA board and advocate for the thousands of black and brown people that ride the bus daily. And while we do have sitting board members that are allies to our communities, let’s be clear, representation matters,” said Representative Morales.
“Our state's public transportation system is a crucial resource for communities of color which are often underrepresented in decision-making. It is essential that those who rely on our public transit system are not only heard during public hearings, but actively represented in board decisions that affect their daily lives,” said Harrison Tuttle, President of the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC.
