9/12/2024 Rep. Cortvriend honored as Food Policy Changemaker
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Food Policy Council has honored Rep. Terri Cortvriend as a 2024 Food Policy Changemaker.

The award was presented at the part of the organization’s annual policy retreat, held Monday at the Providence Public Library. The council also honored Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence).

Representative Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown) was honored by RIFPC as a committed advocate for the council’s food-environment priorities, especially those related to composting. Representative Cortvriend collaborated with the organization to draft legislation (2024-H 7856) she sponsored this year to establish a fund to promote composting and reduction of solid waste. She is also very engaged with statewide emergency food planning process, attends and supports RIFPC events regularly, and remains outspoken to other legislators about RIFPC and its mission.

“The Rhode Island Food Policy Council commends Representative Terri Cortvriend for being a champion for Rhode Island’s environment. When food waste is put in the landfill it costs towns money and generates potent greenhouse gases. Rep. Cortvriend’s commitment to reducing food waste and increasing composting will save towns money while reducing our state’s greenhouse gas emissions. We are excited to continue working with Rep. Cortvriend in the coming legislative session,” said RIFPC Executive Director Nessa Richman.

The Rhode Island Food Policy Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a more equitable, accessible, economically vibrant, and environmentally sustainable food system.
