Rhode Island YMCA Alliance awards Senator Tikoian for law establishing licensing of state’s youth camps
|
STATE HOUSE — The Rhode Island Alliance of YMCAs honored Sen. David P. Tikoian this morning with a Legislative Champion Award for introducing a new law that establishes procedures and licensing requirements of youth camps, for the safety of children.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be recognized by the YMCA, said Senator Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, Lincoln, North Providence) at the organization’s Rhode Island Leaders and Volunteer Recognition Breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick. “It is gratifying to know that the state’s youth camps are places where our children can be safe from abuse or negligence. I would like to thank the YMCA for bringing this matter to my attention, and I would like to thank my colleagues in the General Assembly for their support in getting this legislation enacted.”
Among the requirements for licensing, the law (2024-S 2174A) calls for adequate potable water; dwelling units to be maintained in good condition; and competent staff, including activities specialists, counselors and maintenance personnel, all of whom would be required to undergo a background check. It would also require staff to be trained in the administration of first aid. The legislation also calls for an inspection of camp facilities by the Department of Human Services before a license is granted.
