9/20/2024 Chairman Craven honored by Rhode Island YMCA Alliance for law establishing licensing of state’s youth camps
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Alliance of YMCAs honored Rep. Robert E. Craven, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, this morning with a Legislative Champion Award for introducing a new law that establishes the procedures and requirements for the licensing of youth camps.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the YMCA and it was a privilege to sponsor this new law that will ensure that our state’s youth camps are safe and up to the standards that our children deserve.  I thank the YMCA Alliance for being terrific partners in getting this law passed and for the incredible services that they provide to Rhode Island’s children,” said Chairman Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown).  “I also accept this award on behalf of the entire House of Representatives. It is with their dedication and cooperation that this law came to fruition.”

Among the requirements for licensing, the law (2024-H 7154A) calls for adequate potable water; dwelling units to be maintained in good condition; and competent staff, including activities specialists, counselors and maintenance personnel, all of whom would be required to undergo a background check. It would also require staff to be trained in the administration of first aid. The legislation also calls for an inspection of camp facilities by the Department of Human Services before a license is granted.
