Media Advisory: New commission studying educational pipeline for planners meets tomorrow
|
STATE HOUSE – A new House commission studying the educational pipeline for planners in Rhode Island will meet for the first time tomorrow.
The meeting is scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. in Room 135 on the first floor of the State House. The agenda includes the election of a chairperson and vice chairperson, an introduction of members and a discussion of the resolution creating the commission.
The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv
The 13-member special commission is to study the ability of the Rhode Island educational system to offer degrees or certificates to provide a pipeline of planners, planning technicians and staff, and report back to the General Assembly by Jan. 1, 2025. Its purpose is to address a shortage of planning professionals in the state and the lack of a local educational program to establish a pipeline for these jobs.
The resolution (2024-H 7977A) creating the commission was sponsored by House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), and was approved by the House in April.
The commission includes North Smithfield Planning Director Mark Carruolo, Johnston Town Planner Thomas Deller, Rhode Island Assistant Commissioner on Postsecondary Education Jessica Key, University of Rhode Island President Marc Parlange, Rhode Island College Vice President of Corporate Relations and Professional Studies Jenifer Giroux, Community College of Rhode Island Professor Matthew S. Ulricksen, Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning Associate Director Meredith Brady, Rhode Island Department of Housing Chief of Municipal Planning and Programming Joshua Berry, American Planning Association Rhode Island Division President Roberta Groch, Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns Senior Policy Advisory Charles J. Donovan Jr., New England Institute of Technology Assistant Provost Henry S. Young, NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley Executive Director Joseph Garlick and HousingWorksRI Director Brenda Clement.
