10/4/2024 Rep. Casey addresses CVS Health’s announcement of nationwide job cuts
STATE HOUSE — In response to CVS Health’s announcement that it plans to cut 2,900 jobs nationwide, Rep. Stephen Casey expressed deep concern for affected workers and affirmed his commitment to collaborating with state leaders to mitigate the impact on Rhode Island, particularly in Woonsocket, where the company is headquartered.

The job cuts are part of CVS Health’s broader restructuring efforts aimed at improving operational efficiency and positioning the company for future growth. Representative Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket) acknowledged that it would be premature to estimate the number of layoffs or the full impact on surrounding communities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts; CVS Health is expected to make an official announcement next week. While the cuts are expected to primarily affect corporate positions, Casey emphasized the importance of protecting the state’s broader workforce and economy.

“We are committed to ensuring that affected workers have access to retraining programs, job placement services and any available assistance throughout this challenging transition,” said Representative Casey. “Our focus is on finding solutions that protect jobs in our state, support displaced workers and identify new opportunities for growth.”

Representative Casey emphasized his ongoing collaboration with state leaders and executives at CVS Health to address the situation.

“We’re fortunate to have such dedicated leadership guiding Rhode Island’s economic strategy,” he said. “Governor Dan McKee, Secretary Tanner, and the team at Commerce have been key in advancing policies that strengthen our business landscape. I’m confident that working together, we will continue to maintain a strong business climate and position Rhode Island for continued success.”

Representative Casey assured the public that proactive discussions are well underway, with coordinated efforts between government agencies and the private sector to mitigate the impact of CVS Health’s restructuring. “We are working diligently to leverage both local and federal resources to support those affected and our focus is on helping workers and their families transition smoothly while securing new opportunities for employment and growth,” he said.
