Rep. Finkelman appointed to beach erosion commission
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Alex S. Finkelman has been appointed to serve on the Special Commission to Make a Comprehensive Study and Provide Recommendations for Remedies to the Erosion of Rhode Island Beaches. The commission held its first meeting yesterday, Oct 28.
“Since I represent two coastal towns, Jamestown and Middletown, this commission holds a special importance to my constituents in these communities. No one can deny that coastal erosion is seriously impacting the Ocean State, and we must be prepared to mitigate the situation as much as we can and to adapt to the effects of beach erosion due to climate change. I look forward to hearing the facts and data about what Rhode Island can do to protect one of our most precious natural resources, our beaches,” said Representative Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown).
The commission was created due to legislation (2024-H 7361) introduced by Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly). The purpose of the commission is to make a comprehensive study and cost analysis in order to provide recommendations for remedies to the erosion of Rhode Island beaches.
Other members of the commission include Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly); Rep. Tina L. Spears (D-Dist. 36, Charlestown, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Westerly); Salvatore Marinosci, vice chairman of the Little Compton Republican Town Committee; Terrence Gray, director of the RI Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM); Emily Hall, a coastal geologist with the RI Coastal Resources Management Council; Paula Bontempi, dean of Biological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island; and Caswell Cooke, Jr., executive director of the Misquamicut Business Association.
