Rep. Perez introduces resolution condemning birthright citizenship ban
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Ramon A. Perez (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston) has introduced a House resolution (2025-H 5226) that condemns President Trump’s executive order that bans birthright citizenship.
“Banning birthright citizenship is both illegal and immoral, and such a policy will inflict serious harm on American families. There is no need for this ban and it will go against decades of policy that helped shape the American Dream. For many generations, if you were born on this soil, that meant you were an American, and this fact made countless individuals proud to be Americans. To end this constitutional right is a travesty and goes against everything our country stands for and aspires to. I could not in good conscience stay silent on this issue and I hope my fellow Rhode Islanders will stand with me behind this resolution and its clear message,” said Representative Perez.
The resolution states that the policy has been in place for more than 150 years and is enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution, which grants citizenship to people “born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” regardless of their parent's immigration or citizenship status.
It further states that according to the Pew Center for Research in 2022, 1.3 million United States-born adults who live with their parents were born to undocumented immigrants, and it is estimated that ending birthright citizenship for US children with two unauthorized immigrant parents would increase the existing “unauthorized population” by 4.7 million people by 2050.
The resolution has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
