2/10/2025 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets tomorrow for votes and to hear several bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the Rise of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge to vote on two bills and to hear testimony on several bills.
           
The committee will consider legislation (2025-H 5025) sponsored by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton) that provides that the trapping and subsequent release of any unowned feral or free roaming cat for the purpose of spaying or neutering of the cat would not be considered abandonment.
           
The committee will also consider legislation (2025-H 5046) sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren) that criminalizes the unauthorized dissemination of sexually explicit images of another person that are created by digital devices or created without the consent of the person depicted.
           
Among the legislation being heard by the committee are the following bills:
  • 2025-H 5186, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), amends current law on controlled substances to permit psilocybin to be cultivated within a person's residence for personal use and contingent on the US FDA's program, and mandates that the Rhode Island Department of Health establish rules and regulations.
  • 2025-H 5219, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), establishes the process to provide a legal mechanism whereby a terminally ill patient may choose to end their life using medications prescribed by a physician.
  • 2025-H 5223, sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), provides a remedy for any harm caused due to deprivation or violation of rights secured by the Rhode Island Constitution due to acts of the State of Rhode Island.
  • 2025-H 5224, sponsored by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), provides a civil cause of action for individuals injured by artificial intelligence.
