MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets tomorrow for one vote and to hear several bills
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Rise of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge to vote on one bill and to hear testimony on several bills.
The committee will consider legislation (2025-H 5185) sponsored by Rep. Susan R. Donovan (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth) that prohibits the use of service agreements that are unfair to an owner of residential real estate who enters into such an agreement or to persons who may become owners of that real estate in the future.
Among the legislation being heard by the committee are the following bills:

2025-H 5358, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), under certain circumstances, provides immunity from arrest and prosecution for prostitution, procurement of sexual conduct for a fee, loitering for prostitution and soliciting from motor vehicles for indecent purposes.

2025-H 5363, sponsored by House Minority Whip David J. Place (R-Dist. 47, Burrillville, Glocester), prohibits civil asset forfeiture regarding violations of the controlled substances laws until a criminal conviction is obtained.

2025-H 5440, sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), permits non-sworn public safety officers/security guards at private colleges/universities to detain individuals for no longer than 30 minutes within the campus's jurisdiction if the officer or guard believes the person committed a criminal offense.

2025-H 5442, sponsored by Rep. Kathleen A. Fogarty (D-Dist. 35, South Kingstown), expands meaning of bomb threats and false reports to include any warning or threat of the existence of an explosive device and allows judges to impose conditions of bail to include extreme risk protection orders, no trespass orders and counseling.
