|
STATE HOUSE –Rep. Karen Alzate and Sen. Lori Urso today hosted three female Pawtucket students at the State House to serve as “Legislators for the Day” in honor of International Women’s Day.
“These young women are exceptional students and future leaders of tomorrow and we were honored to show them what it means to represent one’s community at the State House. International Women’s Day is a time to recognize the crucial and tremendous accomplishments of women in our lives and history, and we believe this celebration is a perfect time to demonstrate to these students what women are capable of achieving within the government and the state,” said Representative Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls).
“Anytime we have an opportunity to uplift and encourage emerging women leaders, it is important that we embrace it. Today’s events allowed these exceptional young women to see the possibilities before them, to motivate them as they continue their academic pursuits, and to show them first-hand the important roles that women play our government and in our communities. It was my privilege to serve as co-host alongside Rep. Alzate, and to welcome the students and panelists to the State House today,” said Senator Urso (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket).
Sahara Silwal from Shea High School, Nalian Dominguez from Tolman High School and Jaelyn Batiz from Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Arts were selected as “student leaders” by their respective principals for their academic achievement and citizenship.
The students and legislators held a meet and greet luncheon at the State House where the students were recognized for their academic achievements. The students spoke with a four-member panel of women professionals consisting of Melissa Husband, chief of staff to the president of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island; Chanda Womack, executive director of the Alliance of Rhode Island Southeast Asians for Education (ARISE); Christy B. Durant , legal counsel for the House Policy Office; and Angeliz Rosa, director of The Children’s Workshop in Pawtucket.
After the luncheon, the students joined the legislators for a tour of the building and a view into the inner workings of state government. The students followed the legislators as they conducted their day in the State House and also met with Rhode Island’s General Officers. The students also participated in an interview with Capitol Television and they were recognized on the House floor during session.
