MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets tomorrow to consider legislation and to hear several bills
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, March 25, at the Rise of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge to consider several bills, and to hear testimony on several other bills.
The committee will consider the following bills:

2025-H 5300, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), considers election officials and poll workers “public officials” for purposes of the prohibition on making threats to public officials.

2025-H 5638, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), provides for a single, increased range of penalties for all driving offenses which result in serious bodily injury or death.

2025-H 5892, sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), protects the personal information of judicial officers and their immediate family members who serve, or have served, the RI unified judicial system, as well as judicial officers who reside in RI and who serve, or have served, in the federal courts.

2025-H 5899, sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), adds five driving violations to the statute that defines aggressive driving.

2025-H 5900, sponsored by Representative Noret, distinguishes, in two separate subsections, a first offense for reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor, and a second or subsequent offense for reckless driving, which is a felony.

2025-H 5901A, sponsored by Representative Noret, provides an additional exception to the prohibition on usage of wireless communication device while driving and clarifies that use for purpose of navigation must be while the device is mounted or otherwise affixed to vehicle and not held in the motorist's hand.

2025-H 5637, sponsored by Rep. Mia A. Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln), adds “debit cards” to the section of law relating to fraudulent use of credit cards.

2025-H 5639, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), establishes the crime of attempted kidnapping of a minor.

2025-H 5655, sponsored by Representative Dawson, makes it a misdemeanor to harass another person by following them and using an electronic device to record their movements in any public or private place.

2025-H 6026, sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), amends the Uniform Controlled Substances Act and reclassifies simple possession of 28 grams or less of certain controlled substances as a misdemeanor.
