3/27/2025 House passes Rep. DeSimone’s bill that allows for increase in veterans tax exemption for Providence
STATE HOUSE – The House today passed legislation (2025-H 5307) sponsored by Rep. Anthony J. DeSimone that would authorize the Providence City Council to increase the veterans tax exemption.

“The current veterans tax exemption in Providence hasn’t increased in 25 years and we all know that economic conditions for our veteran residents have changed significantly since that time.  This bill will allow the Council to give Providence veterans the tax relief that they desperately need and deserve.  It’s the least we can do to thank them for their dedicated service,” said Representative DeSimone (D-Dist. 5, Providence).

The legislation would authorize the Providence City Council to exempt from taxation a specified dollar amount of real and/or personal property for the following qualifying Providence residents:
  • Veterans of war
  • Unmarried spouses of veterans of war
  • Veterans or the unmarried widow or widower of veterans who are 100% totally disabled through service connected disability
  • Gold Star parents
  • Veterans who were prisoners of war
  • Using the exemption for specially adapted housing for veterans with paraplegia
The legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration, where Sen. Frank A. Ciccone III (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston) has introduced the legislation (2025-S 0720).
